Putting the finishing touches on the deal, Silicon Labs officially acquired Norwegian low-power MCU specialist Energy Micro for $170 million (U.S.). Energy Micro, known for its energy-efficient 32-bit MCUs based on the ARM Cortex-M architecture, also is developing multi-protocol wireless RF solutions. Silicon Labs says these products will complement its existing 32-bit, mixed-signal MCUs as well as sub-gigahertz and ZigBee wireless RF products by adding nearly 250 energy-efficient MCUs and new low-power wireless protocols such as Bluetooth Low Energy.
