QUICK TAKE: Introduced as the first 1 Gb/s LVDS chipset with true embedded clock architecture, the DS90UR241 serializer and DS90UR124 deserializer chipset serializes 24 bits of data over a single differential pair

QUICK TAKE:
Introduced as the first 1 Gb/s LVDS chipset with true embedded clock architecture, the DS90UR241 serializer and DS90UR124 deserializer chipset serializes 24 bits of data over a single differential pair (two wires). In addition, this SerDes chipset features a unique random data lock. The chipset can drive high-quality video data over 10 meters of cable.

See Associated Figure

MORE INFO:
Unlike other SerDes chipsets that require system designers to employ a second oscillator at the receiver, the DS90UR241 and DS90UR124 combo’s true embedded clock architecture receives data without burdening the system with a second oscillator. This reduces system cost and simplifies system design by eliminating the need to match transmit and receive oscillator frequencies. For hotplug applications, the chipset’s random data lock feature enables quick recovery from datastream disruptions caused by spurious electrical impulses or momentary mechanical disconnects. Other SerDes chipsets require a training session for the serializer and deserializer to achieve lock; this chipset locks quickly with any data pattern.

VIDEO APPLICATIONS:
With the proliferation of flat panel displays into demanding new commercial, industrial and automotive applications, system architects often need a way to drive high-bandwidth video data over long distances. By achieving 1 Gb/s of bandwidth over a single, low-cost differential pair, the DS90UR241 and DS90UR124 chipset enables highquality displays in a variety of applications, including automotive navigation and rear seat entertainment, point-of-sale (POS) terminals and industrial displays. Additional features such as ac-coupling, at-speed BIST link diagnostics and programmable pre-emphasis also help to drive long cables.

KEY FEATURES:
  • Total throughput of 1.03 Gb/s
  • Frequency of 5 MHz to 43 MHz supports a wide variety of LCD panel resolutions
  • 24-bit data payload
  • True embedded clock: No external reference clock or oscillator required at the deserializer
  • Robust random data lock
  • At-speed BIST
  • Programmable pre-emphasis for long cable drive
  • AC-coupling support enables short-circuit protection of the serial link
  • DC-balanced transmission to minimize jitter
  • Low EMI emissions
  • Voltage range of 3.0V to 3.6V
  • Wide temperature support of –40°C to 105°C
  • AEC-Q100 and ISO-10605 qualified

MORE ABOUT NATIONAL SEMI’S LVDS TECHNOLOGY
National Semiconductor's low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) technology is a low-power, low-noise technique for high-speed data transmissions over copper interconnects. The LVDS approach solves current and future highperformance data transmission challenges in bandwidth-hungry applications by delivering data at gigabits per second and at milliwatts of power.
