Big future for nano chips

Messe Muenchen has set up a separate exhibition area for micro and nanoelectronics at electronica 2006. In the MicroNanoWorld area there will be exhibits from industrial companies and research institutes.

Nano semiconductor technology — with structures in the range of one millionth of a millimetre — is considered to be one of the key technologies for the 21st century. One important step towards realising nano chips has already been taken. Researchers have succeeded in building a simple electric circuit on a single cylindrical molecule of carbon (referred to as a nanotube). Nanotubes feature excellent electrical conductivity and ...

Wider choice of compression standards on mobile phones achieved with VC-1 hardware IP

Greatly improving the processing of multimedia content available to mobile phones by expanding the choice of supported standards, Renesas has announced the development of hardware IP supporting a decode function for the VC-1 video compression standard.

The IP features the addition of a VC-1 standard compatible decode function to Renesas' current VPU4 (Video Processing Unit 4) hardware IP enabling encoding and decoding for the MPEG-4 and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (referred to below as 'H.264') video compression standards.

Multimedia content has become well established in the mobile phone field, and video content is ...

Focusing on RFID

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) will be a key application technology to be discussed at the "Wireless Congress 2006: Systems and Applications" conference, a part of electronica 2006.

Although not new in development terms, RFID tags have recently been compared to mobile phones in terms of far-reaching application with world-wide revenues set to increase nearly ten-fold from $300 million two years ago to around $2.8 billion in 2009 (Source: In-Stat).

Last year, estimates put the number of RFID tags produced at 1.3 billion, and the increase in take-up, particularly in supply chain management, should see that ...
