IR Receivers Handle Extremely Noisy Environments

Dec. 17, 2010
The company's latest family of miniaturized automatic-gain-control category 5 (AGC5) IR receivers are suitable for remote-control codes with short bursts.

The company's latest family of miniaturized automatic-gain-control category 5 (AGC5) IR receivers are suitable for remote-control codes with short bursts. Providing reliable noise suppression, the devices are immune to dimmed LCD backlighting, noise from plasma screens, and any fluorescent lamps. Each includes a photo detector and preamplifier circuit mounted within an epoxy-encapsulated module that acts as an IR filter. Operation is from a 2.5V to 5.5V supply with a minimum irradiance of 0.1 to 0.15 mW/m2, depending on the package. This translates to a transmission range of 45m in dark ambient light for most standard remote controls. Other features include a carrier frequency range from 30 kHz to 56 kHz and a 0.35-mA supply current. Pricing starts at $1 each. VISHAY INTERTECHNOLOGY, INC., Malvern, PA. (619) 336-0860.
