SVID-Enhanced Controller Maximizes DDR Memory Flexibility

The PV3201 dual-phase digital dc-dc controller developed by Powervation comes with a Serial VID (SVID) interface.

Cork, Ireland: The PV3201 dual-phase digital dc-dc controller developed by Powervation comes with a Serial VID (SVID) interface. SVID is the communications protocol of Intel’s VR12/VR12.5 specification for Intel-based memory, graphics, and similar applications.

Through SVID, the CPU can dynamically control the output voltage, slew rates, power states, as well as monitor the device for telemetry purposes. The PV3201 controller concurrently supports SVID and PMBus commands, allowing configuration, control, and monitoring of the VR controller for advanced system power management.

To improve efficiency, the PV3201 implements the company’s “Green Modes” technology, which provides optional modes to reduce power loss during light-load operation and idle conditions.  Further efficiency gains come from the enabling of SVID commands to trigger the adding and dropping of phases, and the use of diode emulation mode.

The controller implements Powervation’s DSS current share bus. As a result, paralleling of multiple PV3201 devices is possible for multi-phase, high-current loads.

The PV3201 controller is designed to function with all leading driver, FET, and DrMOS solutions. Therefore, designers have maximum flexibility when powering DDR memory and other Intel SVID-compliant applications for server, storage, communications, and VRM applications.
