PFC Controller Cuts Power Consumption In Half

Dec. 3, 2013
With a 50% reduction in power consumption and power factor correction (PFC) greater than 0.95, Texas Instruments’ UCC28180 PFC controller will be able to support a variety of universal-input ac-dc applications.

With a 50% reduction in power consumption and power factor correction (PFC) greater than 0.95, Texas Instruments’ UCC28180 PFC controller will be able to support a variety of universal-input ac-dc applications. The device has an adjustable switching frequency range from 18 to 250 kHz, allowing the use of IGBTs, and gallium-nitride, silicon-carbide, or silicon MOSFETs. It achieves ac-input current total harmonic distortion (THD) as low as 5%, using a 50% smaller shunt resistor than previous-generation solutions (thus cutting power dissipation in half). Protection includes soft overcurrent, cycle-by-cycle peak current limit, output open-loop, overvoltage, and open-pin detection. When output voltage exceeds regulation level, the UCC28180 allows for faster loop response. This minimizes incidence of audio noise in magnetic components caused by abrupt pulse-width-modulator output shut-off during overvoltage protection. The controller comes housed in an 8-pin SOIC package. Applications range from industrial and server power supplies to air conditioners, lighting, and home-office electronics.
