The PTHxx series of plug-in power modules incorporate Auto-Track sequencing technology, which allows multiple modules to be powered up and down in sequence without external circuitry. Through this technology from Texas Instruments, the modules can track each other's output or an external control voltage. The PTHxx modules also offer pre-bias startup and margin up/down control.

These nonisolated point-of-load converters (POLs) are also noteworthy for their high power density and wide range of input and output options. The horizontally mounted POLs step down a 3.3-, 5-, or 12-V input to an adjustable output at 0.8 to 5.5 V. The POLs, rated for 6, 10, 15, 20, or 30 A, achieve power densities of 200 W/in.3 or more.

While these modules' nonstandard pinout makes them incompatible with existing POLs, TI has inked second-source agreements with Artesyn Technologies and Astec Power (Emerson), who will introduce their versions of the PTHxx series in the third quarter. Members of the PTHxx series are now sampling from TI. Pricing starts at $9.95 each per 1000.
