  • Mission in partnership with NASA, Lockheed Martin, and others to send a spacecraft out to asteroid 101955 Bennu that is planned to launch this year and collect samples of the asteroid for further analysis.
  • Led by UA’s Lunar & Planetary Laboratory with Principle Investigator Dante Lauretta
  • Over half (52%) of all near-earth asteroids and comets have been discovered by the University of Arizona
  • Instruments include a complicated suite of imaging sensors that are to be developed in the University of Arizona’s Optical Sciences department.

Hack Arizona

  • In two years, has become the largest student-run hackathon in the southwest with 800+ students in the 2nd iteration.
  • Weekend long event that allowed students from around the country (and even some from out of it, i.e. Canada and Mexico) to get together to try to build great things.
  • Allows students to spend an entire weekend connecting with companies who sponsor the event. In addition, allows companies to gain unique insight into how potential hires work under pressure.

Optical Sciences

  • Top graduate school in regards to optics and educates more students in optics than any other school in the United States.
  • Has a vast range of research from large telescopes to sensors for accurate weather patterns.
  • Has a mirror lab (Richard F. Caris Mirror Laboratory) that directly contributed to the creation of the Giant Magellan Telescope, one of the largest and most advanced telescopes in the world.

Cross-Disciplinary Senior Design

  • All engineering seniors work in teams of four to six on a year-long project that is sponsored by a company. Many projects even result in patents and implemented by their sponsored company.
  • Each engineering team is a diverse, cross-disciplinary group of students from different areas of engineering, not simply with other engineers of their same field.
  • This gives students real-world experience and industry members are able to connect with the students as mentors and sponsors. Students choose projects they are interested in, work with a budget with their teams, and present design reviews and presentations to their sponsors and faculty advisors all in preparation for Design Day.
  • Design Day is an exhibition of the Senior Design projects in May where the students present their work and judged by industrial companies to win prizes and recognition.
  • Companies include: Lockheed Martin, Ventana Medical Systems, BAE Systems, Raytheon, Texas Instruments, Honeywell, and more.
  • Innovative projects range from robotics to biomedical applications to drone monitoring systems.
