APEC Interview: TI Improves FET Performance Thanks To Ciclon's High-Performance CMOS FETs
If there was a big buzz about anything at APEC, it was about TI's brilliant move in snapping up the Bethlem, Penn. company and its portfolio of IP related to extremely high-performance CMOS FETs. I had an opportunity to talk to Ciclon Semiconductor founder Mark Granahan, along with Texas Instruments’ senior power-management VP, Steve Anderson about TI's acquisition of Ciclon.
PFC Controller Integrates Resonant Controller
The NCP1901 power factor correction (PFC) controller from ON Semi integrates a resonant half-bridge controller into a single package, enabling off-line adapters with a minimal form factor while meeting worldwide efficiency standards.
Third-Gen Schottkies Eye Motor-Drive/Renewable-Energy Apps
Infineon’s third generation thinQ! SiC Schottky diodes claim to deliver the industry's lowest capacitance for any given current rating. Target applications include active PFC in switched-mode power supplies and other ac-dc and dc-dc topologies such as solar inverters and motor drives.
Power Supply Chips Boost Efficiency
NXP Semiconductors, Inc. announced a new suite of power management devices, the GreenChip PFC, GreenChip SR controllers, and a portfolio of 30-V power MOSFETs in LFPAKs at APEC 2009. According to NXP, these devices promise to reduce power consumption in desktop PCs and laptops.
LCD TV Reference Design Includes Power, Inverter Supplies
The latest GreenPoint open reference design from ON Semiconductor for LCD TV power supplies combines the main system power with the backlight inverter. The 180-W High-Voltage LCD Integrated Power Supply (HV-LIPS) was introduced at the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) in Washington, D.C.
APEC Lectures: Handling Economic Upheaval, Lithium Batteries, Fossil Fuel Independence, And More
APEC 2009's plenary speeches included panels like PSMA's roadmap to recovery in economic crisis, EPA's energy efficiency, A123 on lithium batteries, MIT's switching supplies forecast, and more from across the globe.
Off To APEC 2009
This will be my fourth APEC pilgrimage. I' m coming up on my fifth anniversary with Electronic Design, on this Analog/Power beat, and another APEC is cause for reflection. When I picked up the reins from my predecessor David Morrison, I had the naïve idea that the analog part of the gig would be more interesting than the power part. No way!
