It's A Multimedia CPU Feeding Frenzy!
The ARM Cortex-A5 and MIPS M14K and M14Kc lines are new architectures that the customers of these vendors will be using to build new chips. Meanwhile, ZiiLabs and VIA Technologies are offering new chips—the ZMS-08 multimedia processor and the Nano 300, respectively—using their own designs.
Medical Devices Take Center Stage At IMEC Technology Forum
Back in early October, I headed to Leuven, Belgium, to attend the IMEC Technology Forum. IMEC specializes in nanotechnology research in information and communication technologies (ICT), healthcare, and energy. The presentations ran the gamut of research at the facility, but the most impressive concerned the communication between cells and electronics at the nano scale.
Get Linux In An RJ-45 Module
Lantronix’s XPortPro with its 32-bit processor is built to run Linux and Lantronix’s own Evolution operating system (OS). The Evolution turnkey sysem supports Lantronix’s ManageLinx with VIP Access.
High-Availability Carrier-Grade Linux Does DRDB
One of the many new features of MontaVista’s Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) Linux 5.1 is support for disk replication within a cluster via open-source Distributed Replicated Block Device (DRDB) software. DRDB uses high-speed network links to provide RAID-like operation in a high-availability (HA) environment.
Combo Handles Touch And Proximity Tasks
Silicon Labs is making capacitive touch and promixity tasks easier to implement with its QuickSense portfolio. This includes the Si1120 infrared sensor and the C8051Fxx/C8051F8xx 8-bit microcontrollers.
Dual-Core, Dual-Source Processor Includes Flexray For Auto Apps
Freescale and STMicroelectronics have joined forces to deliver a dual-core Power processor designed for the automotive market. Both vendors will deliver the same pin-compatible chips, providing customers with a second source.
Time To Move To Windows?
Embedded developers looking to jump over Microsoft Windows Vista are in luck. Based on the Windows 7 kernel, Windows Embedded Standard 2011 will supersede Windows XP Embedded, currently known as Windows Embedded Standard 2009.
Transceivers Boast More Automotive Interfaces
SMSC has expanded its TrueAuto offering with the USB83340 USB 2.0 transceiver with high-performance ESD protection and overvoltage protection up to 30 V. The LAN8930 10/100 three-port managed Ethernet switch has a pair of ports with PHYs and one MII interface.
Where There's Smoke, There's Fire? Not Necessarily...
While the sensitivity of smoke alarms can save lives, they often go off when there isn't any actual fire. That's why most alarms have switches that easily turn them off when there's no real emergency. You just have to climb up on a chair to reach them. SmokeSign.com and GreenPeak offer a couple of alternatives.
FPGA Module Sports Virtex-5
Opal Kelly’s XEM 5010 module brings the power of Xilinx’s Virtex-5 FGPA to developers. This USB-based module offers 256 Mbytes of DDR2, 4.5 Mbytes of SSRAM, 32 Mbytes of serial flash, and up to 200 high-speed user I/Os via a pair of Samtec QSE-060 conectors.
FMC AMC Supports Virtex-6
The Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Systems VITA 57 ADC512 and ADC513 modules plug into any FMC socket. The ADC512 has a 3-Gsample/s, 8-bit, dual-channel ADC. The ADC513 has a four-channel ADC. Both will support FPGAs such as Xilinx’s Virtex-6.
6U PICMG 2.16 SBC Targets Rugged Environments
Concurrent Technologies’ 6U CompactPCI single-board computer (SBC) can handle the 2.26-GHz SP9300 Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The Mobile Intel GS45 mobile-class chipset can support up to 8 Gbytes of DDR3-1066 soldered dual-channel SDRAM.
Cameras Catch Traffic Violations Around The World
Editor in Chief Joe Desposito describes the traffic camera systems he has encountered in his travels, from Gallatin, Tenn., to Cardiff, Wales, as well as the time one new system caught him running a red light.
Which Compression Format Provides The Most Bang For The Buck?
We all want value for our money, especially during the current economic downturn. But when it comes to compression algorithms, what’s the best way to determine value? Let’s take a look at audio compression algorithms and figure out which ones provide the best “bang for the buck.”
Rugged LCD Industrial PC Delivers Windows CE
The E2000 from Glacier Computer is an LCD panel housing a 600-MHz Texas Instruments OMAP processor. The system can handle up to 1 Gbyte of memory. It supports 802.11b/g and USB 2.0, and it has built-in smart UPS support. Power can be 10 to 60 V dc. The panel also has four LEDs and three function buttons.
New Power-Management Policies Emerge At DAC
Power management was high on the feature lists of the products shown at July’s Design Automation Conference in San Francisco. For example, Mentor Graphics highlighted new features in its Vista platform that allow users to model, analyze, and optimize power at the transaction level of abstraction. Synopsys showed off its DesignWare minPower Components, which are designed to provide major reductions in power for datapath logic compared to traditional power optimization methods.
Multicore Designs Keep Up With Moore's Law
The transistor count keeps following Moore’s Law. But unless you’re at the low end of the 32-bit spectrum or below, multicore is the only alternative to more powerful platforms. It addresses the clock and power issues that play a much bigger part in designing new chips. Without multicore, the drive for more power-processing systems would come to a grinding halt. This has led to a plethora of multicore designs from Freescale, Intel, and Nvidia.
Eval Kits Speed FPGA Designs
Xilinx has opened the FPGA development gates with a pair of evaluation kits for the latest Spartan 6 and Virtex 6 FPGAs. The SP601 Spartan 6 board has one FMC connector. The ML605 has a pair plus DVI outputs and a small LCD. The boards have 1-Gbit Ethernet connections along with DDR3 RAM and flash memory.
Ethernet Controller Integrates Security
The ENC624J600 from Microchip features a 10/100-Mbit/s Ethernet controller with a parallel interface and SPI. The chip also has a built-in MAC and PHY and 24 kbytes of SRAM. The integrated security engine handles RSA, Diffie-Hellman, MD5, and SHA-1 algorithm computations. It can support a range of cryptographic protocols such as SSL/TLS, SSH, and various VPNs.
Flat Panel Fronts Atom
The Eurotech Vx-120F-N270 12.1-in. TFT display with an eight-wire resistive touchscreen interface is home to a fanless 1.6-GHz Atom N270 processor. The system can handle up to 2 Gybtes of memory and a 2.5-in. SATA hard drive.
