ETX Driving Embedded I/O

The rapid evolution of technology has its blessings, but for embedded system developers it poses the threat of quick obsolescence. Developers needing to address long system lifetimes with commercial computing technology have options, however. One is the computer-on-module (COM) approach, which puts the I/O on the motherboard and makes the processor the plug-in. This article discusses the advantages and applications of the COM approach with an emphasis on the ETX (Embedded Technology eXtended) standard. As a specific example, the article discusses the ETX-NANO-104 from ACCES I/O. The article concludes by discussing the impact of PCI Express on embedded design.

ACCES I/O Products, Inc. supplies an extensive range of analog, digital, serial communication, and isolated I/O boards and solutions. ACCES also offers complete systems, integration services, and enclosures with a quick turn-around on custom projects including software. ACCES products are designed for use with PC/104, PCI, PCI-X, Low Profile PCI, EBX, ETX, EPIC, USB, Ethernet and ISA, as well as distributed and wireless I/O.
