We packed in four Ideas for Design in this issue.
We start with a circuit that uses pulsed current to check transistor hFE on an oscilloscope. The circuit creates the biasing conditions specified by the transistor’s manufacturer. Next we have a switching power supply that was devised to ensure high-side FET gate control, particularly in light of a wildly floating high-side rail. The design’s “VeeDrive” delivers a sharp and muscular square-wave that’s robust enough to drive several charge pumps. A simple two-transistor circuit enables that control and provides over-voltage protection. It is handy for low-voltage microcontrollers often need to control higher-voltage loads via high-side switching. Finally we have a smart switch design that adds a few standard, low-cost components to a basic driver that you can enhance to provide short-circuit protection. It also has built-in diagnostics.
