Electroabsorption Modulator Driver Can Cruise Along At 10.7 Gb/s

Oct. 1, 2000

The VSC7991 OC-192 electroabsorption modulator driver operates at data rates up to 10.7 Gb/s, which is said to accommodate the overhead required for forward error correction. And the opto device's 3Vp-p output swing is claimed to provide excellent electroabsorption modulator driver eye characteristics. Other features of the device include rise and fall times of less than 35 ps and very low jitter. It requires a single 6.5V supply and operates at temperatures ranging from -40°C to 85°C.
The maximum current the device can deliver into a load is 65 mA. And the controls for the bias and modulation currents are directly accessible to external circuitry, allowing for precise monitoring and setting of the current levels to compensate for changes in the characteristics of the laser modulator. Power dissipation is less than 1W. And pricing is less than $200 each/5,000.
