Developed by Royal Philips Electronics, the bulbs use the company’s high-power, next-generation Luxeon LEDs. The bulbs were also devised to meet or exceed Energy Star qualifications for an LED-based replacement for 75-W incandescent bulbs. Those specifications call for delivering 1100 lumens with just 17-W, having a color temperature of 2700 k, a color rendering index (CRI) of 80, and a rated life of 25,000 hours.
Philips says it will submit the new bulb for Energy Star qualification testing in the coming months. It also expects to offer the bulbs for sale in the fourth quarter of 2011. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for consumers has not yet been finalized but is expected to be in the range of $40 - $45.
The new bulb's rated life is 25 times longer than that of the 75-W incandescent and it consumes 80% less energy than a traditional bulb.
