High-Performance Computing Comes to the “Tactical” Edge

Modern warfare is increasingly decided by the speed and accuracy of data processing. Vast amounts of data from a growing range of sensors must be translated into mission-critical information, and how fast that happens hinges on access to large amounts of computing power. Cubic is taking high-performance computing (HPC) to the “tactical edge” with an all-in-one solution that makes it possible to process complex data-rich workloads, including applications powered by AI, even in environments with limited or unreliable connectivity to the cloud.
The Fusion Edge High-Performance Compute (eHPC) integrates a 64-core EPYC CPU from AMD, a dedicated graphics processing unit (GPU) from NVIDIA’s RTX family, and a high-speed networking switch from Cisco in a single unit. Targeted at the military and defense sectors, the rugged system is supplemented by up to 512 GB of DDR4 DRAM and eight slots of user-accessible storage. Cubic said it delivers more than enough high-performance computing and networking to handle heavy-duty workloads such as machine learning and real-time video analysis even when disconnected from the cloud. Expanding on Cubic’s DTECH family of tactical systems, the new offering adds an integrated UPS power supply (UPS), too.
