RF Multichip Modules Target Phased-Array and Multifunction Radar Systems

June 13, 2024
Qorvo's low-noise, RF multichip modules deliver high performance for advanced radar applications.

Check out our coverage of IMS 2024.

Qorvo launched three highly integrated, RF multichip modules (MCMs) that can be used to build phased-array and multifunction radar systems. The modules incorporate multiple functions into a single package. The MCMs include the QPF5001 12-W X-band front-end module (FEM), the QPM2101 S-band receive variable gain amplifier (VGA), and the QPB1029 L-band filter bank (see figure)

The QPF5001 X-band FEM incorporates a power amplifier, low-noise amplifier (LNA), and limiter. Half the size of a discrete component implementation, the MCM targets the 8- to 12-GHz X-Band. The QPF5001 can interface with a circulator. Its transmit power is 12 W saturated and the receiver noise figure is 1.5 dB.

The QPM2101 S-band VGA is designed for S-Band radar applications in the 2.5- to 4.0-GHz range. The MCM includes a transmit/receive switch and a low-loss pass-through transmit path. The receive path uses a low-noise amplifier, a digital attenuator, and a driver amplifier. It supports 30 dB of small signal gain and a 1.0-dB noise figure. The VGA uses a 6-bit digital step attenuator (DSA) with 31.5-dB gain control range that can deliver 13.8 dBm of power at P1dB with 32 dBm of output TOI.

The QPB1029 L-band filter has a pair of switches on both sides of eight filters and the bypass.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.

I still get a hand on software and electronic hardware. Some of this can be found on our Kit Close-Up video series. You can also see me on many of our TechXchange Talk videos. I am interested in a range of projects from robotics to artificial intelligence.
