PowerSystems World: Raising the Bar Again

Oct. 1, 2004
If you're a power electronics professional who wants to stay on top of an ever-changing industry, then clear your calendar and pack your bags for PowerSystems

If you're a power electronics professional who wants to stay on top of an ever-changing industry, then clear your calendar and pack your bags for PowerSystems World. This premier event unites the Power Electronics Technology Exhibition & Conference and the Power Quality Exhibition & Conference in one convenient location. Slated for Nov. 16-18, 2004, at Chicago's Navy Pier, this year's conference and exhibition promises to be more informative than ever, allowing attendees to see and try the latest products, learn from industry authorities and even do some comparison shopping.

Always Improving

This year's conference program will address participants' requests for more in-depth technical sessions and an even broader range of topics. Power Electronics Technology Editorial Director Ashok Bindra and Editor David Morrison directed the content for this year's conference, ensuring it will be timely, leading-edge and informative.

Furthermore, new course offerings and speakers will provide attendees with valuable technical information and practical advice. Information-pack seminars, professional advancement courses and numerous technical paper presentations will help participants advance their careers.

Exhibit Hall

Aisle after aisle of leading suppliers will be on hand in the exhibit hall to answer attendees' power electronic questions and offer solutions to design and application challenges. There's no better way to make a product recommendation than meeting with the more than 240 industry vendors and inspecting, testing and pricing their products. Admittance to the exhibit hall is free for those who pre-register.

In addition to the Power Electronics Technology exhibit hall, those who have a Power Electronics Technology attendee badge will have admission privileges to the Power Quality Exhibition & Conference. Here, products that address alternative energy sources and standby power supplies will be on display.

Poster Sessions

This year, an overwhelming number of exceptional papers was submitted for presentation at the conference. Because not all of these paper could be included, some of the authors have been invited to present their papers at the Poster Sessions in the exhibit hall on Wednesday, November 17 from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

Keynote Speakers

On Tuesday, November 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., Patrizio Vinciarelli, founder and CEO of Vicor Corp., will present his keynote address: “ Where Should the ‘Buck’ Stop?”

The Intermediate Bus Architecture, which relies on nonisolated point-of-load (POL) buck converters, suffers from fundamental limitations in confronting the challenges of powering a digital world. The need for efficient POL power conversion-down to a fraction of a volt-with requisite density and speed, has led to new power conversion engines and a new power distribution architecture. The keynote address will discuss how these new engines overcome the limitations of niPOLs with a more granular form of distributed power: FPA.

Following Vinciarelli's speech, EPRI President Kurt Yeager will address the status of electric reliability in North America, the role of the power quality and reliability industries in supporting the nation's electric infrastructure, and EPRI's research and practical role in bolstering enhanced electric service to meet the needs of the 21st century.

Award Presentations

After the keynote addresses, the first Power Electronics Technology Lifetime Achievement Award and the John Mungenast International Power Quality Award will be presented. Both of these awards honor individuals who have made major contributions to their respective industries.

Additional Events

Attendees can take advantage of free round table discussions, where leading industry authorities will discuss power electronics challenges and offer advice. Furthermore, those who buy, use or specify high-voltage products and equipment should check out the High-Voltage Pavilion — a special area on the show floor designated for manufacturers of high-voltage products.
