Symposium Reflects International Influence

Hawaii provides the perfect setting for the many special features included in the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility July 8-13 in Honolulu. Not only is the theme this year East Meets West, but the IEEE EMC Society also will be observing its 50th anniversary in the 50th state with an impressive list of special activities such as a celebration luncheon on Friday (July 13).

Debuting at the symposium is the Global EMC University, an intensive program targeted toward engineers who have been in the EMC profession for less than five years. This special education track, for which CEUs will be awarded to participants, has been so well received that it was sold out as of press time. Symposium organizers have indicated they are considering continuing this program at EMC 2008 in Detroit.

The majority of the six-day program is filled with technical paper presentations, and this year’s selection represents a truly international flavor. The 10 technical committees of the IEEE EMC Society reviewed a record-setting 300-plus papers before choosing this year’s group of very diverse presenters. Approximately 30% of the authors are from Asia, 31% are from the United States, and 39% are from Europe.

The schedule includes special sessions and workshops covering topics such as automotive EMC, power/signal integrity, waveform diversity and EMC, electronic packaging, emerging EMC technologies in Japan, advanced EMI measurement, industry-standard cables and shielding performance, algorithms and techniques for parallel processing for EMI/EMC, and managing regulatory access to Asia Pacific markets.

Two days of workshops begin on Sunday (July 8).
A total of 20 workshops will be held before a special tutorial, A Conversation With the IEC Advisory Committee on EMC, concludes the program on Monday evening (July 9).

A schedule of the workshops and technical program, including the titles of individual presentations, accompanies this article.

Exhibits

More than 200 companies will be exhibiting the latest EMC products and services ranging from EMC modeling software to complete test systems. All the booths will be staffed with technical experts. Exhibit hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 10) and Wednesday (July 11) and 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday (July 12).

NARTE Examination

The NARTE certification exams for EMC engineer and EMC technician, traditional complements to the symposium, will be held concurrently on Saturday, July 14. The NARTE Examinations Preparation Tutorial, which will be conducted on Sunday, is part of The Fundamentals of EMC Workshop recommended for anyone planning to take the NARTE certification examinations or to attend The Global EMC University.
