Exploring 3D NOR Flash Technology
What you’ll learn:
- 2D NOR flash challenges.
- Why do we need 3D NOR flash memory?
- What are the challenges in designing 3D NOR memory?
NOR flash memory has been a mainstay for microcontrollers and microprocessors for code and data storage, while NAND flash handles data storage. The latter has higher capacity on its side, but NOR is the choice when reliability and performance are essential. That’s why it’s preferred for storage support of applications such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
2D NOR flash has run into implementation challenges, though, which is where 3D NOR flash comes into play. It leverages similar stacking techniques used for 3D NAND flash.
In this Inside Electronics podcast, Electronic Design’s Bill Wong sits down with Macronix International Chairman and CEO, Miin Wu, to discuss the specifics about the company’s 3D NOR technology.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.
I still get a hand on software and electronic hardware. Some of this can be found on our Kit Close-Up video series. You can also see me on many of our TechXchange Talk videos. I am interested in a range of projects from robotics to artificial intelligence.
