Summary

Embedded systems have been around for several decades. In that time, they evolved from basic stand-alone systems to become highly connected, and capable of performing complex processing tasks in what has become known as the ‘Intelligent Edge’. Fundamental to these systems is the real-time operating system (RTOS) – responsible for ‘bridging the gap’ between the necessary software applications and the embedded system hardware.

One company that is synonymous with the RTOS is Wind River Systems. The company recently conducted an industry survey to gain important insights into current trends, practices and challenges faced by Engineering teams responsible for developing today’s embedded systems software that runs on the RTOS – in industries including Aerospace & Defense, Automotive, Industrial Automation, Medical, Robotics and more.

These findings are captured in a new webinar in which Wind River expert, Michel Chabroux, looks at the implications for today’s RTOS market, and offers insight into the future, as the market adapts to the demands of these ever-evolving, high-performance embedded systems and the teams that develop them.

You will gain key insights into RTOS market dynamics, in areas including:

  1. AI/ML Integration:  Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning capability and associated data processing within embedded systems is becoming table-stakes, and thus efficient integration is a ‘must have’.
  2. Time Sensitive Networking (TSN): Modular design is now commonplace in real-time systems, with interconnected modules handling both real-time and non-real-time data on the same ethernet network. TSN is how the industry achieves this, hence increasing numbers of system processors have this capability – placing stringent requirements on the chosen RTOS.
  3. Certification Challenges: Achieving cost-effective functional safety and meeting cybersecurity requirements remains a constant challenge in regulated industries. Identifying common obstacles and driving down the time-to-certification is essential.
  4. Hardware Capabilities: Hardware configurations used in real-time embedded systems now typically include multi-core processors, co-processors, a variety of processor architectures, and a wide number of board manufacturers. Understanding trends in hardware development and the associated RTOS implications makes for an informed choice – important to kick-starting any development project.
  5. Development Practices: Modern embedded systems development teams are increasingly adopting a DevSecOps approach and cloud-enabled tooling. The choice of software development operating systems, programming languages, and availability of integrated development environments (IDEs) are all critical to reducing time-to-market.
  6. Decision-Making Criteria: Engineering and management teams need to consider various criteria in their purchasing and development decisions about the choice of RTOS.
