The CX24116 is described as the first satellite set-top box (STB) demodulator and forward error correction (FEC) decoder based on the next-generation digital video broadcast DVB-S2 standard. The device allows operators to offer additional content and services, such as high-definition television (HDTV) channels and interactive services, as well as basic local programming, using existing bandwidth and infrastructure. It also paves a path for service providers to use advanced modulation with low-density parity check (LDPC) and Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) FEC. An integrated microcontroller handles fast-signal acquisition, Es/No (Symbol energy/Noise power spectral density) estimation, and system monitoring chores. Its fast-signal acquisition algorithm searches and acquires the carrier within a ±10 MHz range during initial acquisition and performs a smart search to re-acquire under fade conditions. Additionally, the chip's DiSEqC 2.x-compliant demodulator integrates signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate monitors for channel-performance measurements. Available in a 100-pin, exposed TQFP, price is $25 each/10,000 CONEXANT SYSTEMS INC., Red Bank, NJ. (888) 855-4562
