75 W Single-Stage Driver Raises Efficiency Of LEDs

Two additions to Power Integrations' LinkSwitch-PH IC family, the LNK410EG (dimming) and LNK420EG (non-dimming) PFC/CC converter chips are purported to raise the efficiency of LED high-bay, parking-lot and street lamp drivers to over 92%. Providing a constant-current output with a PF-corrected and low THD input, the converter chips allow commercial lighting applications up to 75 W to benefit from single-stage design, enabling a smaller driver with high efficiency. The capabilities of the devices are showcased in RDR-290, a reference design describing a single-output driver for high-bay lighting. RDR-290 is 92.2% efficient at 230 VAC for a 75 W output design while meeting EN61000-3-2 class C limits. Power factor is above 0.95 and a primary high-voltage electrolytic bulk capacitor is required, making lifetimes of 50,000 hours practical, even in challenging outdoor environments and at high ambient temperatures.
