A new low-profile, surface mount LED has been designed with a right-angle orientation. The SML070 LED has a footprint of 2.4 mm x 3.3 mm, making it suitable for placement on PCBs where components are densely packed. It comes in both one-color and a bi-color versions. Single-colored LEDs come in yellow and high-efficiency green and red with a clear lens. Bi-color LEDs come in the combination of high-efficiency green/red, with a milky white lens. Depending on color, luminous intensities range from 1.2 to 2.3 mcd at 20 mA. The SML070 can be used with the company’s OptiLED light pipes to simplify the spatial relationship between the PCB and remote indicator illumination points. This LED is said to broaden the illumination options available for backlighting computer panels, handheld instruments, and data- and tele-communication status indicators. The device is said to be impervious to electrical and mechanical shock, vibration, frequent switching and environmental extremes. Average life span is more than 100,000 hours. Pricing is $0.95 each for single color and $1.42 for bi-color. LEDTRONICS INC., Torrance, CA. (800) 579-4875.
