Addressing security concerns, the DS28CN01 EEPROM provides bi-directional challenge-and-response authentication protection by way of an SHA-1 cryptographic algorithm. Its 1-Kb EEPROM array and command set ensure tamper-proof data storage, and each EEPROM page is protected against modification by the algorithm. The device also includes programmable write protection and EPROM/OTP emulation modes. Other features include a factory-programmed, 64-bit ROM ID number that can be employed for a variety of system-level functions including unique electronic serialization of equipment and network-node identification. The ROM ID also serves as an element in the device's overall secure functionality as a dynamic variable within the SHA-1 computation. Communication is via a 400-kHz I2C/SMBus-compatible interface that includes a programmable bus timeout feature. The DS28CN01 operates from 1.8V to 5V over a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C. Available in an 8-pin microSOP, pricing starts at $0.65 each/1,000. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
