Iowa State engineers develop flexible skin that traps radar waves, cloaks objects

Iowa State University engineers have developed a new flexible, stretchable and tunable “meta-skin” that uses rows of small, liquid-metal devices to cloak an object from the sharp eyes of radar. The meta-skin takes its name from metamaterials, which are composites that have properties not found in nature and that can manipulate electromagnetic waves. By stretching and flexing the polymer meta-skin, it can be tuned to reduce the reflection of a wide range of radar frequencies. Read More

Why Become an Engineer?

Program Overview

Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECpE) offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs that provide students with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in the electrical engineering, computer engineering, and software engineering fields. Students get to interact with our departments’ diverse student body and faculty, and obtain practical experience to prepare them for exciting careers where they can make a difference in people’s lives. Research in our department focuses on five high-impact interdisciplinary areas: bioengineering, cyber infrastructure, distributed sensing and decision making, energy infrastructure, and small-scale technologies.

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University is a community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni—as well as industrial and governmental partners—working together to improve the state of Iowa and society in the broadest terms through mechanical engineering research, education, and service.

As a community of scholars, we create and share knowledge at the highest levels through our educational and research programs. We are committed to improving lives and livelihoods through research in the science and technology of mechanical engineering and delivering a superior and forward-looking education to our students. We strive to be discipline leading in our endeavors, and our scholarship values center on the concepts of innovation and impact that are distinctive, recognized, and enduring.
