Engineers from General Electric will upgrade the lights on the 117-year old Tower Bridge in London this year, replacing conventional flood lights with LEDs, as well as replacing the wiring. The current 25-year old lighting tends to “flatten” the architectural details, according to GE. The LEDs, on the other hand, will enhance those details, which include gothic turrets, suspension chains, and an aerial walkway. The LEDs are more energy efficient and will use less electricity. The color of the LEDs’ light can also be controlled, letting the city create spectacular displays on the Tower Bridge during major events like the upcoming London Olympics. Work is scheduled to start this September and be finished by Spring of next year.
