A line of SMD solid-tantalum capacitors, the THJ 200C series, delivers 1000 hours of continuous operation at 200°C with derating. Initially, the capacitors come in two E-case sizes: the E 220-µF, rated at 10 V for 3-V rail applications at 200°C, and the E 100-µF, rated at 16 V for 5-V rail applications at 200°C. The small surface-mount package lends itself to fast pick-and-place assembly techniques and a negative temperature coefficient ensures no localized heating, which eliminates thermal runaway and destruction or degradation of the device. Leakage current is less than 1 mA after 1000 hours of operation at 200°. Because tin/tin-lead terminations have melting points too low for reliable operation at 200°C, the components use a gold-plated termination for hybrid assembly. Typical applications include oil and gas drilling, aerospace and defense, and automotive. Lead time is nine weeks. AVX CORP., Myrtle Beach, SC. (843) 448-9411.
