Monotype Imaging said Garmin has licensed Monotype’s iType font engine to display scalable text on a range of Garmin nüvi automotive navigation devices.

Monotype executive vice president John Seguin said the engine has been tailored to enable memory-constrained devices to display clear text that can be scaled to any size. Other features of the engine include fast rendering, small code size and the ability to apply special effects, such as displaying text outlined in different colors.

“As devices become more interactive throughout the world, we believe that fonts will take on an even more important role,” Seguin said.
