Ultracapacitors hold less electricity than comparably-sized batteries, but absorb and release it much more quickly, usually in a matter of seconds. The ability to absorb and release electricity rapidly is crucial for time-sensitive electricity storage, including power grid frequency regulation, fast vehicle acceleration and capturing energy from vehicle braking. To learn more about this technology, Contributing Editor John Edwards recently spoke with Chad Hall, chief operating officer of ultracapacitor manufacturer Ioxus.
