Taiyo Yuden Inc. introduces the PAM150, the first model in its new PAM Series of affordable, passive PFC-based, switch-mode power supplies for 1-U-height, single-output medical applications. The PAM150 offers medical equipment OEMs a lower cost per watt and other economic benefits by employing passive PFC technology—versus the more complex, less reliable, active PFC technology.
Since the recent de-classification of many Class D end devices to the less stringent Class A category per EN61000-3-2 harmonic distortion standards, active PFC technology now provides unnecessary functionality at higher cost. The PAM150 switcher provides greater reliability and higher MTBF (mean time between failure) through use of fewer components, while meeting the appropriate Class A PFC and harmonic distortion requirements for medical equipment.
In operation, the PAM150 switcher provides a universal 115/230-Vac input selection and a single 150-W continuous power output. The user may select one of several factory-set output voltages, including 3.3 V, 5 V, 12 V, 24 V and 48 V. The PAM150 switcher features optional current-sharing capability for 1+1 redundancy with no special interconnection requirement.
Other options include remote on/off, and droop or single-wire current sharing with O-Ring diodes. The standard unit provides superb heat dissipation, but is also available with an optional fan with its own 12-Vdc supply. Other standard features include: dc “OK,” ac power fail, and protection against overload, overvoltage, reverse voltage and thermal conditions.
The PAM150 is ideal for the full spectrum of low-power medical OEM power supply needs. The PAM150 features quick prototype delivery and Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) to verify design parameters and ensure 100% out-of-the-box operation. The device measures just 6.0 in. × 4.0 in. × 1.5 in. and comes with a 2-year warranty. Pricing is under $60.00 each in OEM quantities
