Touch Screen Data Converters Boost Handheld Device Accuracy

Sept. 1, 2001

Designed for use in a wide range of handheld devices and point-of-sale (POS) terminals that use a touchscreen, the AD7843 and AD7873 a/d converters integrate a 12-bit, successive-approximation register with low on-resistance switches for driving a touchscreen and the AD7873 provides an on-chip temperature sensor from -40ûC to 85ûC, direct battery and touch-pressure measurement, and a 2.5V reference. Both devices consume less than 1.4 mW of power maximum with the internal reference off while operating at throughputs greater than 125 ksamples/s. Other features include 10 to 12 KeV ESD protection on analog inputs and 2.2V to 5.25V operation. Available in 16-lead QSOPs and 16-lead TSSOPs, prices for the AD7843 and AD7873 are $2.15 and $2.30, respectively, each/1,000. ANALOG DEVICES, Norwood, MA. (800) 262-5643.
