Measuring Busbar Weld Impedance in Battery Packs

Dec. 1, 2021
Testing at each point in the battery pack manufacturing process is critical to ensure that batteries meet proper safety and efficiency standards.  This application note discusses a simple, reliable method for conducting the busbar weld impedance test.

Battery packs contain smaller modules that are connected in parallel or series by a busbar. The current carried by the busbar could be up to several amps. Therefore, small resistances in the weld can generate enough heat to degrade the batteries and lead to early failures or unsafe operating conditions. The busbar weld impedance test characterizes the impedance of this weld. This application note discusses a simple, reliable method for conducting the busbar weld impedance test.
