Automotive Audio Testing — Amplifier Focus

April 29, 2024
Explore the typical tests for car audio amplifiers, from gain and level to harmonic distortion. Discover essential test equipment and the special considerations for Class D amps in this paper on automotive audio measurement.

Most modern automotive audio amplifiers are class A/B or D, due to a desire to keep power consumption to a minimum while still maintaining high power output and an acceptable (low) distortion level. Auto manufacturers do not publish their proprietary test methods used for evaluating amplifier performance, but the measurements one would want to make on automotive audio amplifiers are readily identifiable. In this paper we discuss the typical measurements made and identify areas of concern related to automotive systems.
