From the optoelectronics front comes a new device that integrates a remote-control receiver and an IrDA transceiver into a single, three-lens, surfacemountable package that’s targeted at the PC market.

When assembled into a notebook or multimedia computer, Vishay Intertechnology’s TFDU7100 enables several functions, including remote control of video or music playback and wireless sharing of photo, MP3, and other file formats. By consolidating all of these functions into one package, designers of PC housings are able to limit the number of daylight filtering windows. This ultimately avoids having to trade off between remote control and IrDA functionality.

Integrated within the TFDU7100’s 8pin package are two high-speed PIN photodiodes, an infrared emitter, an IrDA control IC, and a remotecontrol IC. For remote control, the TFDU7100 meets Microsoft’s Media Centre specifications by receiving signals with carrier frequencies from 20 to 60kHz over a minimum distance of five metres. Its maximum receiving distance is 18 metres in the 36 to 38kHz range. For IrDA communication, the TFDU7100 supports all IrDA data rates up to 4Mbits/s over the inherently secure distance of one metre.

To simplify the transition to the TFDU7100, the package is the same size and pad pitch as Vishay’s 4Mbit/s transceiver used in 80 % of IrDA-enabled notebook PCs. Providing added flexibility, the device can be mounted with lenses in side- or top-looking orientation. The TFU7100 IrDA plus RC transceiver operates from 2.7 to 5.5V over a -25 to +85°C temperature range. It’s lead-free, capable of lead-free processing, and complies with RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE.
