Targeting OC-192, 10-Gb/s short reach data links, the VSC7166 optical interconnect IC integrates both transmitter and receiver circuits on a single chip. The very-short-reach device converts 16-bit, 622-MHz SONET-framed data to twelve 1.244 Gb/s serial data. Other chip features include error detection, the ability to recover data transmissions, integrated simulation of error conditions, and user-selectable input-termination resistance. The device uses 2.5V and 1.8V power supplies and is available in a 27-mm, 256-pin BGA package priced at $70 each/10,000.
