Packaged in a 3x4 ultra-chip-scale package measuring 1.5 mm x 2.0 mm, the MAX2242 linear power amplifier (PA) delivers 28.5 dB gain and +22.5 dBm linear output power with an ACPR of up to 33 dBc first side lobe and up to 56 dBc second side lobe-it is compliant with the IEEE 802.11b 11 MB/s WLAN standard. The MAX2242 PA integrates a 3-stage power amplifier, power detector, and power management circuitry. The power detector provides over 15 dB of dynamic range with ±1 dB accuracy at the highest output power level, allowing an accurate automatic level control function to be implemented. The PA also features an external bias control pin. Through the use of an external DAC, the current can be throttled back at lower output power levels while maintaining sufficient ACPR performance. The device operates on a single 2.7V to 3.6V supply, with an on-chip shutdown feature reducing operating current to 0.5µA. Pricing for the MAX2242 PA starts at $1.97 each/1,000.
