TerreStar Networks Inc., an emerging mobile network operator, picked IBM BladeCenter servers to design, build, and operate the first all-IP 4G land- and satellite-based communications network. The network, expected to launch in 2008, is an answer to problems incurred when cell phone antennas go down or are overwhelmed during emergencies, and will serve government, first-responder, and enterprise customers. "We needed the optimal platform that would allow us to move ahead and execute a VoIP solution to create our next generation voice service," Jeff Stern, Vice president of service architecture and channel support for TerreStar, said in a statement. "IBM BladeCenter can deliver the best support for our mission critical applications and minimize upfront expense while allowing us to scale capacity to keep up with anticipated growth." The satellite will be able to allocate bandwidth in real-time to impacted areas. The system is designed to handle extreme call volume and data communications essential to first responders. Customers will have access to voice, video and broadband communications during any situation.
