The InfiniBand Trade Association, formerly known as System I/O, has announced the addition of eight sponsoring member companies: 3Com, Adaptec, Cisco, Fujitsu-Siemens, Hitachi, Lucent, NEC, and Nortel Networks.
The trade association is developing an industry specification for a channel-based, switched-fabric architecture. It expects to deliver a final released specification early this year. Initial products based on the specification are expected to be in production in 2001.
The new organization is led by seven steering companies: Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems. Additionally, seven special workgroups, each with its own charter area of expertise and responsibilities related to the specification-development process, report directly to the Steering Committee.
