Introducing USB4

USB4 products should be showing up soon now that the chips have arrived.

Editor Bill Wong talks with USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) president, Jeffrey Ravencraft, about the imminent flood of USB4 products that can handle dual hi-res displays with a single cable. The standard was released in 2019.

Key features of USB4 include:

Two-lane operation using existing USB Type-C cables
Speeds up to 40-Gb/s operation over 40-Gb/s certified cables
Multiple data and display protocols that efficiently share the maximum aggregate bandwidth
Backward compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University.
