With multiple stages of current limiting to protect -48V applications from various types of supply faults, the LTC4251 hot-swap controller in a six-lead SOT-23 package is small enough to fit in a dc/dc converter module. The device integrates three stages of programmable current limiting: over-voltage and under-voltage monitoring and a multi-function time. Over-current faults are limited but not latched off until a timed circuit breaker expires. Major faults result in immediate latch off of the supply. Current-limit thresholds are set via a sense resistor, a resistor divider sets over/under-voltage thresholds, and a capacitor sets timing. Pricing starts at $1.95 each/1,000.
