Capable of driving up to 144 LEDs, the AS1119 lays claim to being the most advanced and smallest LED dot-matrix driver available. The device consumes 9 mm² worth of PCB space and drives each LED with an eight-bit dimming control and no external resistor. Additionally, an eight-bit analog current control allows fine tuning of each matrix to compensate for different brightness levels or to adjust white balance on RGB LEDs. Other features include six frames of memory, a 320-mA charge pump, 1-MHz I²C compatible interface, open/shorted LED error detection, and low-power shutdown current. Available in a 36-pin WL-CSP, price for the AS1119 is $5 each/1,000. AUSTRIAMICROSYSTEMS USA INC., Raleigh, NC. (919) 676-5292.
