HiWave’s wireless speaker module supports consumer hi-fi applications with up to 40 hours of playback from a typical AA battery.

Cambridge, U.K.: HiWave has developed a wireless speaker module for consumer hi-fi applications with impressive battery life (see the figure). Designed for wireless streamed audio in the home, the 13-W burst (26 W peak) module uses HiWave’s HIAS2001-QNC-010 amplifier chip, which consumes one-twentieth the power of other amplifier technologies at typical listening levels (68 dBC at 1 m).

The complete wireless speaker system draws less than 75 mA at typical playback levels. Connected to a single 1.2-V rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) AA battery (3000 mAh), the speaker delivers 40 hours (600 songs, 220 albums) of playback—and more than 145 hours of playback from a rechargeable size D battery (11,000 mAh).

The amplifier module works with all speaker types. HiWave anticipates consumer Hi-Fi quality speakers will be in shops for the second quarter of 2012.
