Addressing continued demands for higher power density, Micrel’s MIC24085x family of fixed-frequency, current-mode dc-dc converters with integrated power MOSFETs features a 3- by 3-mm footprint. The device, optimized for +12-V rails, offers a cost-effective option for distributed power systems and communications applications—in 1000-unit lots, pricing starts at 0.53 cents each. The family consists of six members: The MIC24085A has an adjustable output voltage from 0.9 to 5.5 V, while the MIC24085B/C/D/E/F have fixed output voltages of 1.5, 1.8, 2.5, 3.3, and 5 V, respectively. Input voltage for all devices ranges from 4.5 to 18 V. They deliver 3 A of output current while operating at a 1-MHz fixed frequency. Peak current-mode architecture provides fast transient response. Pulse-frequency-modulation mode boosts overall efficiency at light load. Protection includes undervoltage lockout, internal soft start, cycle-by-cycle current limit, output overvoltage, and thermal shutdown. Junction operating temperature ranges from 40 to 125°C.
