The latest member to join Exar’s XR81112 series of universal clocks offers output frequencies from 100 MHz to 1.5 GHz. Coupled with phase noise jitter of less than 200 fs (over a 1.875- to 20-MHz bandwidth), the clocks will suit applications such as communications, audio/video, and industrial. Using a flexible delta-sigma modulator and wide-ranging VCO in a power-efficient PLL block, core current consumption is a mere 20 mA. Thus, according to the company, the clock dissipates 60% less power than equivalent competitive devices. The PLL, which can operate from an input system clock or a crystal, incorporates both an integer divider and high-resolution fractional divider for greater flexibility in generating various clock frequencies. Up to four different multiplier settings can be stored. Also, the clock is configurable for LVCMOS, LVDS, or LVPECL outputs. The RoHS-compliant devices come in 3- by 3-mm QFN-12 packages.
