Ultra-High-Efficiency Resonant AC-DC Converter Solution Eyes 500-W to 10-kW Apps

Derived from the traditional boost PFC + LLC resonant power converter, Eggtronic's ClassEgg converter architecture is a zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) converter implementation that reduces losses and component count in high-power applications requiring power factor correction (PFC).

As described in the January 2023 edition of PowerBites, the converter's unique architecture is based on a proprietary magnetic component. It ensures ZVS operation, reduced EMI, and higher performance than interleaved solutions at the cost of a standard boost PFC.

In addition, ClassEgg offers higher performance and lower component count than standard LLC resonant converters, according to the company, thanks to a patented rectifier and control algorithm that ensures multiple regulated outputs and high efficiency simultaneously.

Circuits based on the ClassEgg architecture deliver excellent efficiency between 10% load and full load. Thus, it will find homes in power supplies for TV panels, PCs, servers, and large home appliances, as well as power-conversion systems in electric and hybrid vehicles and solar-panel inverters.

2023 was another remarkably busy year for the power sector, marked by unusually high levels of technical innovation and new product introductions within nearly every application category. This year, we even saw some notable developments in passive components and design tools, making it even more difficult than usual to trim down our long list of deserving candidates for this year's PowerBest awards.

Despite our best efforts to hold the final list of awards to our traditional dozen, a surge in the number of promising power-related products and technologies added an additional two entries to our 2023 PowerBest honoree roster. We've broken them down into three rough categories for easier navigation:
