The InnoSwitch3-Pro family of ICs launched by Power Integrations at APEC 2018 this week simplifies the development and manufacturing of fully programmable power supplies. A basic I2C interface is used to configure, control and supervise operation of the power subsystem, enabling dynamic, adjustable control of output voltage (in 10-mV steps) and current (in 50-mA steps) when paired with a microcontroller or with inputs from the system CPU.
Said by Power Integrations to be capable of delivering up to 65 W and achieving up to 94% efficiency across line and load conditions, InnoSwitch3-Pro devices are well suited for AC/DC power supply applications where fine output voltage and current adjustment are desirable.
These include virtually any rapid-charging protocol, including USB Power Delivery (PD) 3.0 + PPS, Quick Charge 4/4+ and other industrial and consumer battery chargers, as well as dimmable LED ballast drivers and field-configurable industrial power supplies. When used in this way system efficiency is increased because the InnoSwitch3-Pro eliminates the need for DC-DC post-regulators (which also reduces BOM count).
The power-conversion ICs include a microprocessor VCC supply - eliminating the need for an external LDO to power the microcontroller. Also included is an n-channel FET driver which may be used to enable or disable the main power output. The series further offers integrated bus voltage, current and fault-reporting telemetry and dynamically configurable protection functions such as OTP, line OV/UV, output OV/UV, and short-circuit.
InnoSwitch3-Pro ICs employ Power Integrations’ high-speed digital communications technology, FluxLink, plus synchronous rectification, quasi-resonant switching and a precise secondary-side feedback sensing and feedback control circuit. Devices are CQC certified, UL recognized and TUV (EN60950) approved to bridge the isolation barrier
During the product introduction Shyam Dujari, Director of Product Marketing, Power Integrations noted: “The ability to precisely control the output voltage and current of a power supply over a wide range is also useful for designers of specialized applications with smaller production runs, as they can easily configure a single board design for multiple product SKUs using software either at manufacture or during installation.”
Samples are available now.
