According to a report by IMS Research, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) market experienced massive growth across all regions for the first three-quarters of 2006. Between January and September, the global UPS market grew by more than 15% with the highest growth in the Americas says the marketing research firm. Ash Sharma, Senior Analyst with IMS Research’s Power & Energy Group, notes that worldwide revenues for UPSs during the January-through-September period were $3.98 billion.
“Despite a relatively slow start to the year, double-digit growth was seen across the board in Q2 and Q3 resulting in substantial year-on-year growth for the first nine months of 2006,” says Sharma. “All indications point to strong growth continuing for the remaining quarter of the year leading to a record market size in 2006” says Sharma, who projects that growth in the fourth quarter of 2006 will be 12% to 15% above the same quarter in 2005. Sharma also predicts continued, but slower growth in 2007, while noting that the first quarter of the year is typically the weakest.
IMS Research’s study encompassed all UPS types including rotary- and battery-based systems from personal computer-type devices up to large, three-phase industrial systems. The study excluded “optional” hardware such as replacement batteries, and monitoring units as well as services.
Sharma notes that his firm has not yet “fully identified the drivers of growth this year” in the UPS market.
