Mark Your Virtual Calendar: A Sampling of Fall’s Best Power-Related Online Events
To help engineers keep their skills up to date during the COVID pandemic, the IEEE and other industry groups have moved many of their conferences and trade shows to cyberspace. Although we'll miss the thrill of exploring a new city and the pleasure of catching up with old colleagues over an adult beverage (or three), virtual attendance allows many more of us to learn from industry luminaries on a convenient schedule without the cost of travel—and the accompanying jet lag.
Here's a rundown of some of the power-related events happening across the planet that you can attend virtually over the next couple of months:
Sept 7-11: 22nd European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications, Lyon, France
The online version of EPE’20/ ECCE Europe—one of Europe's longest-running power events—includes a deep program of talks on nearly every aspect of designing energy-conversion equipment, and the technologies that make them possible. The tutorials, held on Monday, Sept. 7, include:
- Characterization and impact of SiC and GaN on Power Drive Systems
- Control of Modular Multilevel Converters for Variable-Voltage Variable-Frequency Applications
- Electronic Design Automation and optimization algorithms for the next generation of optimal power converters
- Model Predictive Control of Power Electronic Systems

Sept 9-10: Works With: Silicon Labs' Virtual Conference for Smart Home Developers
Silicon Labs has partnered with Amazon, Google, Samsung, Z-Wave, other IoT and smart home companies to discuss smart home design trends and ecosystem developments, from connection devices and platforms to protocols. This free program includes keynotes, panels, and hands-on and technical sessions, many of which will be presented by the smart home engineers who developed them.

Sept. 13-18: 32nd International Symposium on Power Semiconductor Devices and ICs, Vienna, Austria
Originally to be held in Austria, ISPSD 20's extensive technical program covers many of the merging issues surrounding the design, evaluation, and application of silicon, silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (GaN), and other types of power semiconductor devices.
The schedule of short courses, which will be held on Sunday, 9/13, include:
- SiC Super Junction MOSFETs and SiC-IGBTs – State-of-the-art in High- to Ultra-High-Voltage SiC Power Devices
- Silicon IGBTs and Fast Recovery Diodes for High Power Applications
- GaN Power ICs: Technology, Dynamic Device Behavior and Design
- Electromagnetic-Circuit Modeling for Advanced Power Semiconductor Devices
- Beyond the Limits of GaN HEMT Technology – Vertical GaN Transistors and Towards AlN Electronics

Oct 11 - 15: 2020 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, Detroit, Mich., USA
Already boasting over 2,000 registered virtual attendees, ECCE is living proof that even a global pandemic can't slow down the world's power community. The five-day schedule of events is a lively mix of technical presentations, tutorials, and industry-related happenings. ECCE also continues its tradition of hosting an excellent series of programs and events devoted to Women in Engineering.

More Powerful Opportunities
Although we don't have the space or the time to list all of the great things going on, here are a few other of the fall's other notable events:
Sept 23-25: IEEE Workshop on Wide Bandgap Power Devices and Applications in Asia (WiPDA Asia) Suita, Japan
Sept 25-26: IEEE First International Conference on Smart Technologies for Power, Energy and Control (STPEC) Nagpur, India
Sept 28 - Oct 2: 2020 IEEE 11th International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG) Dubrovnik, Croatia
