Intel looks to revive PC industry with Skylake

Sept. 2, 2015

Intel yesterday released the 6th Gen Intel Core processor family, nearly coinciding with the debut of Windows 10. The processor had been codenamed Skylake. According to Intel’s Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group, “…we are entering a new era of computing that will bring unprecedented experiences to consumers and business users.”

He continued, “Beyond offering leaps in performance, graphics, security, and power efficiency, the latest processor family brings an immersive computing experience that will forever change our relationship with technology. And for that reason alone, there truly never has been a better time to buy a new computer. These experiences put the ‘personal’ back into PC.”

Features supported by the new processors include biometric login and improved speech algorithms and voice activation capabilities as well as better power efficiency.

According to Don Clark in the Wall Street Journal, “Intel’s long-awaited chips…follow the launch of Microsoft Corp.’s new Windows 10 operating system in late July. The two companies hope the availability of new hardware and software will drive demand for PCs in a shrinking market.”

Clark quotes Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, as saying, “How Skylake does will determine the glide path of the PC industry.”
