TAIYO YUDEN (U.S.A.) has announced a 2.2-µF multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) in the EIA 0402 case size. The new device offers more than twice the capacitance when compared to the previous maximum rating of 1µF for 0402 (1.0 mm × 0.5 mm × 0.5 mm) components. With this development, larger 0603 (1.6 mm × 0.8 mm × 0.8 mm) 2.2-µF devices are no longer necessary, resulting in a more than 50% board space saving for equivalent capacitor performance in effectively reducing noise in power line decoupling circuits.

Continual refinements to the company’s material-handling technology and fabrication processes, coupled with optimizing the crystalline structure of the processed powder, resulted in a significantly higher level of crystallization and uniformity of particulate size. In this way, TAIYO YUDEN scientists were able to maintain the ceramic capacitor’s constant electrical properties while reducing the actual diameter of the dielectric particles to just 0.2 microns. This in turn enabled a corresponding reduction in dielectric layer thickness to one micron or less—opening the way for stable mass production of a new generation of super-thin, ultracompact, high-value capacitors.

In July, TAIYO YUDEN started full-scale mass production of the 0402 size 2.2-µF MLCC, along with a 0603 size 10-µF component. Both are available with X5R temperature characteristics. Sample pricing for the AMK105BJ225MV (0402, 2.2ìF) device is $0.10.
